BARK IN THE PARK 2007

Raging success only partially describes how great our Bark in the Park 2007 turned out this past Sunday as we figure well over 700 people and easily 300-400 dogs enjoyed a simply gorgeous day in the park! There are so many people to thank and we want to first extend our heartfelt thanks to Ft. Toulouse for allowing us to have this event there as we heard numerous compliments on the location and Ft. Toulouse in general. We couldn’t have done this without all of the volunteers who worked so hard and ensured every event was covered, on schedule and just plain fun. “The Country Velvet Band featuring Rick "G" and the "G" Men' provided great music all afternoon which really added to a great day in the park. While we had a very popular “Bone Mountain” full of treats for all the dogs, all the people enjoyed tasty sandwiches, sides, sweets and treats from 3-D Dogs, Plantation House and Garden Restaurant and Sims Cajun Sno-Balls. MADOC’s Microchip Clinic will now help ensure that 22 dogs have an extra level of identification to help reunite them with their owners if they ever become lost and find their way to any facility that scans for the chips (we do). A cornucopia of costumed, cute, not-so-cute, big, little, noisy and just plain loving dogs & their people had too much fun competing in all of our pet contests. After battling a flat tire on the way, the Dixieland Cloggers joined us to show off their talented dancing skills much to the crowd’s enjoyment. Mr. Ken Darnell milked dozens of his venomous snakes so that their venom can be used for bio-research and answered hundreds of questions from curious children and adults alike who wanted to learn more about snakes, their importance and how their venom has medical uses to help humans. The Capital City Street Rod Association showed off their awesome custom street rods and donated $500 to our shelter to boot - wow! And while we had great cars, we also had amazing airplanes showcased by the Elmore County Remote Control Club – they must be something to see in action! Members of the Montgomery Kennel Club brought some of their great dogs for people to “Meet the Breed” and we were joined by great breed rescue groups: Rockin ‘P Boxer Rescue, Alabama English Springer Spaniel Rescue, Adopt-a-Rott, Turtle Moon Pit Bull Rescue, Dixie Dachshund Rescue, Heart of Dixie Basset Rescue, Helping Shepherds of Every Color Rescue, and Greyhound Pets of America South Alabama. We think our vendors had fun and got great exposure; we sold lots of our special “Bark in the Park” T-Shirts (more available at the shelter) and capped the day with our Raffle Drawing at 4 pm. Congratulations to our raffle winners: Judy McDonald, W. Hamilton, Thomas Roman and Kelly Darden.

As we told all our supporters at the end of the day – we do this to bring together all who love animals and support our shelter so well. Sunday’s day of pet-loving fun helps us cope with the facts that our shelter took in 110 dogs and cats, puppies and kittens last Friday and Saturday alone! So if you couldn’t join us at Bark in the Park this year, mark your calendar for Sunday, 28 September 2008 at Ft. Toulouse for another day of pet-loving fun! See you next year!!!

5th Annual ‘Cruisin’ fer Critters’, Wetumpka Riverfest & Eclectic Centennial Celebration.

Yet another awesome group of people braved this sweltering heat to have fun and raise money for our shelter. This past Saturday, August 11th, the Predator Motorcycle Club’s held their 5th Annual ‘Cruisin’ fer Critters’ and raised $3000 for our animals! Over 80 riders braved the heat throughout their 70+ mile ride and then returned to great food, games and music at "The Keys", on Dalraida Rd, Montgomery. In addition to all the riders who showed up, we want to extend our gratitude to the following businesses and individuals whose donations helped make the day such a success: Tillery Heating & Air Conditioning Inc.; Frank Ander; Wright Heating & A/C, LLC; Progressive Insurance; Taylor Crossing Animal Hospital; Dr.Riley Trehern D.M.D.; Don Beatty Construction Services; Labor Finders Montgomery; Lambert Excavating & Construction; Advanced Appraisal Services, LLC; Dr. Darren Dillon D.D.S.; SPF Tinting Inc.; Mike Henby; Veterinary Eye Care, Dr. Susan Nelms D.V.M.; Garden Concepts, LLC; Kaj, Inc.; D/B/A Collision Center; Adam Motorsport; Papa T’s; Connie Stevens; Deborah Griffin; Wizard; Floyd; TNT Motorcycles; Ruben & Jane Nichols; Henig Leather Outlet; Portia Anderson.

Another dedicated group of volunteers also braved the heat to man our booths at the Wetumpka Riverfest and at the Eclectic Centennial Celebration. Many, many thanks to all of these dedicated folks who also helped bring in close to $600 by selling our Cookbooks, T-Shirts, Magnets, our brand new raffle tickets (more to follow) and keeping our Tail’s End Thrift Store up and running: Charlene Pope, Myra Boulware & Ashlee, Leo Schwertfeger, Judy & Roger Coltson, Bill & Jan Hancock, Robin Nelson, Genie Kline, Corrine Dreyfus, Taunia & Trenton Ousley, Jackie Brown, Pat Burkhalter, Jeanne Shamburger, Linda Smith, Shanda Robinson & sons, Jennifer Tritz, Sandy Faulk and Rita Caswell.

Wags & Whiskers “Bone-a-Fit” Silent Auction '07

Huge crowd! Super food! Amazing selection! Talented entertainment! Huge success! All of these describe the results of our Wags & Whiskers “Bone-a-Fit” Silent Auction held on 20 July 2007. We are thrilled to report that the auction brought in over $8500 for the shelter, surpassing our goal of $7500. This was truly a team effort showcasing how our board, staff and volunteers work together for the benefit of our animals. We want to thank everyone who helped make this such a success – Mayor Kelly and the city of Millbrook for allowing us the use of their wonderful Civic Center; all the individuals and businesses listed below that donated items, services and gift certificates for the auction; those who cooked, baked and donated food and drink; all the print, radio and television media who helped us by providing coverage prior to and at the auction; those who donated floral arrangements and decorations that made the place look great; everyone who helped advertise and pass the word about our event; Angie Anderson of Music Express and Ms. Jessica Meuse for the evening’s superb entertainment; and to all the super folks who turned out in huge numbers to support our shelter by bidding and buying all the great items for auction. We know a good thing when we see it, so mark your July 25th, 2008 calendar for next year and plan for an evening of fun and great bidding while you help us help animals in need.
