Humane Society of Elmore County News – 8 Feb '10

This cursed ‘cold’
that is going around knocked us out of the Millbrook Mardi Gras Parade this
past Saturday as just too many of our folks were sick. But our “Mardi Paws
Krewe” has another chance for fun with the “Krewe of Toulouse” Wetumpka Mardi
Gras Parade this Sat, 13 Feb! So if you & your dog would like to join our
group please contact Bonnie Jones at 334-283-6725 or email her at bjschows@yahoo.com
by this Thursday so we can be prepared. To be safe we do ask that your dog
will be comfortable in the parade and to help you decide some conditions are -
all dogs must walk well on a leash and be comfortable in a large and noisy
public setting around people in costumes, with children who might run up to
pet them and around other dogs of all sizes. Owners and their dogs must be
able to walk with their dogs for about a mile which may also include periods
of stopping and waiting. All dogs must have a current rabies vaccination and
be wearing their rabies tag or their owner must have the certificate with
them. Children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult as we
cannot be responsible for their supervision. And we reserve the right to
excuse any dog we deem as unsafe before or during the parade. If you want to
walk one of our shelter dogs we need you to be at the shelter by 10 am on
Saturday and if you are walking your own dog the group will gather at 11 am
behind the First Baptist Church on Bridge Street in Wetumpka as the parade
begins at noon.
And while illness affected our parade fun on Saturday thank goodness it didn’t
impact adoptions as SIXTEEN of our pets found their new homes! That is the way
we wish every Saturday would turn out as that many adoptions is just
wonderful!
To keep up our adoption streak PetSmart Charities® "Second Chance for Love"
2010 Valentine's Weekend Adoption Event is this Fri, 12th (noon – 5 pm); Sat,
13th (11 am - 4 pm) and Sun, 14th (1 – 5 pm). We will be at both PETsMART
stores in Prattville & Montgomery with loving pets looking for their forever
homes. This event is co-sponsored by Hill’s® Science Diet and besides adopting
a wonderful pet, each adopter will receive a free 4-5 lb bag of Science Diet®
pet food, a coupon for $7 off Science Diet® dog or cat food, “The Guide for
Lifelong Health” (a $30 value) and other valuable coupons and samples. If you
can volunteer to help our pets find their new families please contact our
Volunteer Coordinator, Charline Pope at PopeCharlie@russellcorp.com or call
her at 334-202-1381.
Time really is running out, so don’t forget to stop by the shelter to get your
“Getting Down with the Dawgs” Draw Down ticket and your chance to win $10,000!
All the info is on our website, but you won’t want to miss this event on Feb
20th. There are only 300 total tickets at $100 each and each ticket also gets
you and a guest dinner at our event at Bonnie Crest Country Club in
Montgomery. To learn more please go to our website at www.elmorehumane.com,
call Charline Pope at 334-202-1381 or call us at the shelter at 334-567-3377
or email hselco@bellsouth.net.
We never need to ask for this, but we are in need of shredded paper, the
long-cut type. With our big adoption weekend we have an increased need for
shredded paper and have very little on hand. If you are able to drop bags of
paper at our shelter we would be most appreciative.
