Abuse Case - Capone

In July of 2005, Capone, a 4 year-old, intact male, black and tan German Shepherd Dog was brought to our shelter pending a cruelty case by a local police department. Due to his pitiful condition he was taken to a local vet who examined him, finding the following: 15-20 lbs underweight with a body score of 75%; suffering from generalized Demodectic Mange with skin infections and edema; being moderate-severe anemic with a 19% Red Blood Cell (RBC) count instead of the normal 40-50% RBC; having a Pack Cell Volume of 19% when an acceptable reading for a dog his size is 45%; having Whipworms, Hookworms and Tapeworms; being heartworm positive. The vet noted that his conditions were a result of “months of poor health” and that “this dog suffered from parasites, filth and poor nourishment for 6+ months.”

But underneath his pitiful exterior was the heart of a great dog and after months of care and love, Capone blossomed. In December 2005 his owner was finally convicted of cruelty to animals and Capone officially became ‘ours.’ During all the interceding months, Capone proved to be a simply awesome boy with an incredibly loving and gentle temperament. He loved to go for rides in a vehicle, was great with other dogs and cats and simply loved all of us here at the shelter. Once he became ‘ours,’ we were able to accomplish his much needed heartworm treatment and neutering and in early February he went off to his new and wonderful home in north Alabama. Capone now has a family all his own with two energetic boys to play with, an older dog for a companion and all the love he can get. Needless to say, the prospective adopters for Capone had to go through an extensive screening process, and we are thrilled that he is now a member of their family.

The before and after pictures of Capone pretty well say it all and all of us at the shelter were quite attached to this handsome boy. On the day he left with his new family we were all a bit sad but also happy to know that he will now know what love and a great home are all about.

Good luck to you Capone and we wish you a very long, healthy and happy life with your new family.
