Abuse Case - Darlin
ADOPTED!!!
“Darlin” was
rescued by Animal Control in early April 2006 along with her
partner, an older white male German Shepherd. The pictures pretty
well tell her story and for as bad as she looks, the male dog was
10x worse. Sadly he could not be saved as he had been starved so
badly he could no longer stand up or eat. After examination by a
veterinarian it was determined more humane to put the male dog to
sleep so he wouldn’t suffer any more Darlin, however, could at
least walk and eat, so we knew she could recuperate. The pictures
of her at the vet’s office were taken on 13 April.
We brought Darlin
back to our shelter to begin the long process of recuperation. She
had to undergo rigorous treatments for the sarcoptic mange that
covered her from head to toe, be de-wormed as she had about any
intestinal parasite you could imagine, get her immunizations and be
on a controlled feeding schedule so we wouldn’t shock her system.
Understandably
Darlin was a bit scared at first, but quickly came around to regular
feedings and lots of love and attention. You can see the progress
she was making as these pictures are from the 16th of May
– only one month later.
These next
pictures are as of July 12, 2006. While she has completely
recuperated from the sarcoptic mange and is up to a healthy weight,
she does still need to be treated for heartworms and then be spayed.
Darlin is now a
very sweet girl, though she can be scared of new people at first.
Who wouldn’t after what she has been through! But she is a very
loving dog and our feeling is that she will bond very tightly to the
right person or family who can give her a loving and lifetime home.
And yes, her
elderly owner was convicted on two counts of animal cruelty, so
there has been some justice for her partner and for Darlin.
