Rea Cord
I have always had a life-long love of
animals though life took me in a different direction until taking on the
Director’s position at our shelter on 1 May 2004. With a bachelor’s degree
in Environmental Science from Purdue University I embarked on a career with
the U.S. Army, picking up a Master of Science from Florida Institute of
Technology in Logistics Management along the way. After a wonderful 21 year
career as an active-duty Maintenance/Logistics Officer serving all over the
world, I retired in 2003 and was happy tending my own critters and doing
projects on my acreage in Elmore County.
Finding I had the time I started doing
occasional in-shelter volunteer work helping link deserving pets with breed
rescue groups and just volunteering where needed. Then as those odd things
happen in life, I ended up taking on the Director position in 2004.
Outside of the shelter I am Secretary for
the Montgomery Kennel Club and President for the Alabama Humane Federation
and I will say that both organizations are an extension of all of our
efforts to promote Responsible Pet Ownership and help improve the welfare of
animals in our area and Alabama.
Needless to say my days start with animals and end the same and that is just
fine by me. When not at the shelter dealing with the myriads of animals we
care for each day, I enjoy being with all of my own horses, donkeys, goats,
sheep, dogs and cats and believe me, they all live the good life! I am
quite proud of what our small but very dedicated staff does to help the over
5000 animals that come through our shelter every year and want everyone to
know that we work very hard to make sure we are the best shelter we can be
where the welfare of our animals is always at the forefront.

finding our pets that perfect home and Becky couldn’t have found a better
one than with Jan and Norman Scott!

This is our Office Guard at work doing surveillance from on high!
Scarlet has been our loyal office kitty since 2005 when she came to us
with an imbedded leather collar around her neck and one leg. She was
also extremely malnourished, but is one resilient kitty. After some
time at a vet's office getting antibiotics and fluids, she rebounded
and healed perfectly. Scarlet loves to lay on our counter and get
petted by everyone (who wouldn't). She isn't keen on being picked up
and held, but other than that loves all the attention she gets.
Scarlet seems to be quite happy with us and we love her dearly, so
stop by and give Scarlet a scratch next time you visit our shelter.
