Why to Spay or Neuter Your Pet|

This page was last updated on:Thursday January 28, 2010

The Alabama Animal Alliance, Inc. has opened a groundbreaking facility to combat our area's severe pet overpopulation problem. It is well known that there are far too many healthy, adoptable dogs and cats than there are responsible homes for them. As a result, every day animals are euthanized in area shelters or left to fend for themselves along our county roads. The clinic  provides low-cost spay/neuter services to the cats and dogs of central and south Alabama.

Visit their website-Alabama Animal Alliance, Inc.

Have you heard about the Spay Montgomery program?  Spay Montgomery is a new program that enables qualified Montgomery County residents to have their pets spayed or neutered for $10.  To be eligible, residents must be Montgomery County residents and meet one of the following criteria:
1.  Aged 65 years or older - identification required.
2.  A full-time college student - current college schedule required.
3.  A Medicaid recipient - valid Medicaid card required.
4.  A annual household income of $28,000 or less - proof of income required.
The $10 fee includes everything - the surgical sterilization procedure, anesthesia, pain management medications, and rabies vaccination, if needed.  This program is limited to two pets per household and will run while funds are available.  At this time, this program is only available to Montgomery County residents.

The Spay Montgomery program is the result of an incredible grant provided to the Alabama Animal Alliance Spay/Neuter Clinic.  The Alabama Animal Alliance Spay/Neuter Clinic is Alabama's first high quality, high volume, low cost spay/neuter clinic.  We opened in October 2007 with the primary focus of reducing the number of unwanted animals that are euthanized in central and south Alabama by providing affordable surgical sterilizations of cats and dogs.  Since opening we have performed more than 11,000 surgeries.  Based on statistics from the Humane Society of the United States, we estimate that we have prevented more than 160,000 unwanted animals from being born in the year and a half we have been in operation.

The Alabama Animal Alliance Spay/Neuter Clinic is a 501 c 3 non-profit organization that works closely with the Montgomery Humane Society, Humane Society of Elmore County, various rescue groups, and thousands of Alabama residents.  Knowing that you are an animal lover, I was hoping that you might be willing to help us spread the word about this new program that is saving lives by preventing unwanted animals from being born.

Why You Should Spay and Neuter Your Pets

Over 5,000 animals are brought into the Humane Society of Elmore County alone each year because of domesticated pet overpopulation!  Of these only thirty to forty percent are adopted.  And the same is true all over the United States.

Every day in the U.S. thousands upon thousands of puppies and kittens are born because of uncontrolled breeding of pets.  Add to that the number of offspring of stray and abandoned animals, and the total becomes even more staggering.  Every year MILLIONS of animals enter U.S. shelters; at least half of them are euthanized because there are no homes for them. On a larger scale, over 5,500 puppies and kittens are born every hour in America.  This is compared to only 415 people born every hour in America. There are simply not enough homes!  We must act responsibly and help control this overpopulation ‹ spaying and neutering is the Answer!

Some people refuse to spay or neuter their pet because they think it would be nice for their pet to have puppies or kittens. Each responsible home that is found for these means one less home is available for the many shelter animals waiting to be adopted. Each day animal shelters are forced to destroy thousands of dogs and cats due to a lack of responsible homes.  Please, do your part and spay and neuter your pets!  Spaying and neutering can drastically improve your petıs health and life expectancy.  The idea that pets become fat or lazy when they are spayed or neutered is a myth.  Sterilized pets lead healthier, longer lives.  Spaying a female eliminates the possibility of uterine and ovarian cancer and greatly eliminates the risk of breast cancer, not to mention the mess and stress associated with a pet in heat!  Females in heat can also attract potentially dangerous males who often climb into ³secure² fences!  Neutering a male reduces the risk of both prostate enlargement and prostate cancer.  Neutering will also make your pet more affectionate and less likely to want to roam, get in fights, or become lost.
