In response to one of our previous newsletters listing our “Bigger Needs Items” we were thrilled when the Elmore County Farmer’s Federation (ECFF) contacted us to help with a Stock Trailer. About two weeks ago they delivered a brand new, 14’ Stock Trailer to our shelter which means we will no longer need to beg or borrow a trailer for situations involving livestock or larger numbers of smaller animals. This is truly awesome and we are still getting used to having such a nice and new piece of equipment (also thanks to Alverson’s Trailer Sales in Millbrook)!

We just can’t thank the board and members of the ECFF enough for such generosity and support! We also want to thank Brantley Signs in Kent who did the custom painting on our trailer so that all will know it is us when we are on the road. Simply put – our trailer is perfect! And more thanks to Gray’s Tire & Automotive for donating and mounting the spare tire. This is obviously a true collaborative effort and we are indebted to all who helped make this happen! Thanks to all!

We want to publicly thank Frank & Corrine Dreyfus of Cornus Kennels for donating a 2000 Ford Windstar van to the shelter. As our ‘fleet’ of vehicles is quite aged, this truly helps us ensure we can keep doing all the daily traveling we have to do to care for and find homes for our great pets. Thank you Frank & Corrine!

This is a bit overdue – on 24 January the Wetumpka Chamber of Commerce held its annual membership & meeting banquet. As part of the evening’s fun, there was a jackpot drawing for $350 which was won by Mr. Tim Ellison of Ellison Funeral Home, 8801 U.S. Hwy 231 North, Wetumpka, AL 36092. Mr. Ellison very generously donated the entire amount to our shelter and we certainly appreciate his support for our shelter. Thank you Mr. Ellison!

These pictures show a long awaited project come to life of replacing our old worn out portable kennels with permanent block kennels for our incoming animals. As dogs arrive from animal control officers, rescuers and owners we need to often quickly take them in (since there might be many coming in at once) and then later resettle them in our inside kennel runs. These kennels now allow us to do this with increased safety for both people and dogs alike and keep them much safer from each other since not all dogs like each other. These also opened up tons more room in the area between our two buildings and looks much, much more professional.

These wouldn’t finally be a reality if not for the help of a very impressive Eagle Scout from Holtville Troop #185. Bobby Bohman took on the task of building all of the fencing and gates for the fronts of these kennels. With this project our animals benefited and Bobby earned his Eagle Scout which is quite the notable accomplishment!

Bobby, his father Jeff, mother Karen and his fellow scouts took on a task that was much harder than initially anticipated. Since we had worked on this project rather piece meal over a long period of time many adaptations had to be made to make the gates work and to secure the fencing so that no dogs could escape. Bobby not only worked up the design, but supplied the necessary materials with the help of: DataBank Business Services Inc.; Charles & Ethel Gross; Charles Anderson; and Mr. David Dennis of Harmon Dennis and Bradshaw, all of Montgomery. We extend our thanks to these companies and individuals for donating to this project and Bobby’s Eagle Scout effort.

So kudos to Bobby and all who made our plan come to life. If you have ever been to our shelter and saw those old pens you will be most pleasantly surprised at the improvement these new kennel runs are for our animals – thanks Bobby and congratulations on earning your Eagle Scout!

OUR VOLUNTEERS!!

Visit here to see a list of very devoted people who volunteer! Volunteers are what makes the shelter run so smoothly.

CHECK OUT OUR NEW AWNINGS! Thanks to a most generous donation by Mrs. Shirley Sahlie, a long-time benefactor of our shelter, we have been able to add aluminum awning covers to all of our outside kennel runs. With this improvement our puppies and dogs will stay dry during the worst of rain storms and be shielded from the hot Alabama sun during our long summers. We also have no doubt that these awnings will help reduce the temperature inside the kennels during the summer which will be great for our dogs, cats and people alike. We can’t thank Mrs. Sahlie enough for making this possible as it is a major improvement that will improve the health and welfare of the animals in our care. And we also want to recognize Patio’s Plus, Elmore, Alabama for the high quality of the material and workmanship they provided in installing these wonderful awnings. View Photos Here

We at The Humane Society of Elmore County would like to give a huge THANKS to all the rescue groups who have rescued so many animals in need. We have developed some awesome partnerships with so many of you, and hope to continue working together saving lives.
